Welcome back to the NYC Startup Jobs Newsletter! And Happy New Year!

This week I'm doing something a little different. In addition to featuring companies, I'm sharing some tips on how to effectively use AI in your job search.

My Golden Rule in leveraging AI

Be prepared to justify your AI use. This is true in the job search, but also in the work that you do in the job. If an interviewer asks how you used AI in your application, you should be able to confidently tell them exactly how you used it. AI is a tool, not a crutch. Using AI effectively and with confidence will help you to stand out.

AI can be a helpful tool in your job search, but don’t just plug in your resume and have it kick out everything you need. These applications will usually get rejected.

What NOT to do:

  • Don't use all-in-one AI tools that auto-apply to jobs

  • Don't have AI write your resume, cover letter, or application answers

  • Don't use AI during interviews (seriously, quit this shit)

What TO do:

Use AI to refine your writing, not create it. Write your own content first, then ask AI questions like:

  • "How can I better present my skills here?"

  • "What am I missing from my resume that's in this job description?"

  • "Is this accomplishment clearly articulated?"

A Master Resume Strategy

I don’t believe you should customize your resume to every job. However, I do think tweaking your resume slightly to the JD can ensure your key skills are standing out. The best way to do this is leveraging AI with a Master Resume.

I like creating a single “Master Resume” that has all my relevant experience, metrics, and highlights in one resume that I do not plan to share directly. Anytime you’ve worked somewhere for multiple years it’s a struggle to summarize that experience in 4-5 bullet points that fit in a reasonable resume. So, I write a master resume that has all my relevant experience. Don’t go crazy, here, keep it to details that are important. Then, when applying to a job, give AI your master resume and the job description. Ask: "Which experiences are most relevant? Help me pick the best 4-5 bullets."

You're not fabricating experience, you're highlighting what matters most for each role.

Cover Letters

Don't have AI write your cover letter from scratch. Everyone does this and recruiters see the same generic AI cover letter over and over. Instead: Write your own standard cover letter. Then give AI your cover letter, resume, and the job description. Ask: "How can I tailor my cover letter to this specific job?"

Advanced: Build a Custom GPT

If you use ChatGPT Plus or Claude, create a custom GPT. Train it on your resume, portfolio, LinkedIn, past projects, etc. Then when you apply to jobs, it has all your context and can give much better suggestions.

Important Note: AI will still make shit up. Always check that it's not creating skills or experience you don't have.
